Project Information: Volunteers will work to construct part of the Arizona Trail, an eight-hundred-mile-long national scenic trail that extends from the border of Utah south to the Mexican border. The goal of this project is to construct a three mile section on the Alamo Canyon stretch. This will be a multi-use trail for hikers, equestrians, and mountain bikers. While it may be possible to get an offroad vehicle slightly closer to the work site for camp support, participants should be prepared to backpack five miles to the site.
Area Description: This project is located in a remote area in the southernmost portion of Tonto National Forest, south of the Town of Superior, in the Sonoran desert. The area is unique, with spectacular geography and an unusual botanical ecology. The desert climate is variable: weather can range between extreme heat to rainy and cool in the winter.
Climate Information: On average temperatures in febuary are highs in the mid- 60's and lows in the mid-40's. But participants should be prepared for temperature extremes. It is not unusual to get cold snaps for a week or so with below freezing temperatures. Temps in excess of 70 degrees, can also occur in Feb.
