The Tatra National Park, Poland

July 28, 2010

Continuing from Warsaw, into the southern part of Poland (and northern part of Slovakia) I entered the Tatra Mountains. These mountains from the highest range in the Carpathian Mountains.  There are no glaciers in the Tatras, but there often is snow that can remain year-round. Tatrzański Park Narodowy, or Tatra National Park, is located centrally near the town of Zakopane.  There are many of the mountain peaks beyond 2000 meters (6000 feet), the highest being Mount Rysy at 2499 meters.  The Tatra area has many small villages with the people being referred to as górale, or high-landers.  There are over 300 kilometers (almost 200 miles) of trails in this area, with diverse landscapes, that are ideal for hiking.  There is a funicular to Mt. GubaÅ‚ówka that can be found in Zakopane. The cable car to Mt Kasprowy Wierch is at Kuźnice, 3 kilometers to the southeast.
