The Annual California Gray Whale Migration

October 10, 2009

Each year the California Gray Whales (Eschrichtius robustus) start their epic voyage from near the Sea of Okhotsk and southern Korea, and the Eastern Pacific traveling between the waters off Alaska and Baja California.  It is here in Baja California where the whales are able to give birth before returning to their same location in which they started, lasting between two and three months.  It is here in the warm-water lagoons that I took these photos of this incredible marine mammal journey.  San Ignacio Lagoon is located in El Vizcaino Biosphere Reserve to include San Ignacio Lagoon, which is Latin America’s largest wildlife sanctuary.  Not only can you see the whales, but there are many opportunities for hikes, birding, wildlife as well as exploring this Reserve.  Please visit my photos!

What an incredible experience. I have done several trips to this wonderful area over the past few years and highly recommend it and surprised to see so many people from all over the world. Let's work together to keep this experience available for years to come.
